Art

Art and design stimulates creativity and imagination. It provides visual, tactile and sensory experiences and a special way of understanding and responding to the world. It enables children to communicate what they see, feel and think through the use of colour, texture, line, pattern, shape, form, space and different materials and processes.

Children become involved in sharing their environments through art and design activities. They learn to make informed judgements and aesthetic and practical decisions.

They explore ideas and meanings through the work of artists, craftspeople and designers. Through learning about the roles and functions of art, they can explore the impact it has had on contemporary life and that of different times and cultures.

The appreciation and enjoyment of the visual arts enriches all our lives.

Year 3

Art in Year 3 is incredibly popular and rewarding for the girls as they enjoy exploring with a wide range of resources and styles. Activities and projects involve sketching, observational drawing, collage, painting and 3D model making. Cross curricular links are made throughout the year such as with History as we complete work on ‘Cave Art’ following a focus on the Stone Age and an inspiring trip to Dan-yr-Ogof Showcaves. English is enhanced as we work in the style of Quentin Blake and Susan Hellard, illustrators from our class texts.

Designing a ‘Room in a Box’ is always a favourite, allowing the girls to experiment with the design aspect whilst reinforcing and developing their measuring skills and recognising aspects such as perpendicular and parallel lines and symmetrical features. 

Art projects are also extended to the top of the Kymin where items resulting from their foraging en route, are used to complete a range of ‘nature in art’ projects.

Year 3 work in the style of L.S Lowry and focus on Matisse with their ‘Bouquet’ project in the Summer Term. Our observations of flowers again ensures a cross curricular link with their Science topic of plants.

The girls’ work is always celebrated as their Art is displayed in and around the classrooms and the girls are taught to evaluate constructively in every session.

Year 4

Art in Year 4 is exciting creative and imaginative. It draws on their previous skills, encourages close studies of famous artists and is linked to our Literacy and History topics. Girls are encouraged to be inspired by our natural environment through the use of sticks and ink and work together in small groups to design and make an Anglo Saxon home, using natural materials. The evaluation stage becomes increasingly more important as girls are supported in this critical stage to allow their skills to develop further.

Year 5

In year 5, the girls work on the following topics:

Michaelmas Term:

  • Nature
  • Collage – landscapes and perspective
  • Embossing – printing leaf patterns
  • Close observational sketching
  • Landart – DT/construction
  • Watercolours – blending tones
  • Tudor portraits – proportions of the face
  • Trip to Nature in Art, Gloucester – workshop, view gallery and outdoor exhibitions

Lent Term:

  • Portrait studies – proportions of the face, studies of Picasso (self-portraiture)
  • Figurature – study of body position, movement and shape, studies of Matisse
  • Eisteddffod art competition
  • 3D construction – Tudor homes

Summer Term:

  • Reflective Symmetry – pattern and shape
  • Tangrams – 2D Shape study
  • Light and Shade – chalk and charcoal studies of 3D Shapes under one light source
  • Perspective – converting 2D into 3D using line
  • Printing – constructing printing blocks using Aztec designs and pattern
  • Masks – design and make an Aztec Warrior mask

Year 6

In year 6, girls are given the opportunity to work in a wide variety of media.

Michaelmas Term:

  • Observational drawing – use of shading
  • Creative drawing
  • Painting – mixing of hot and cold colours
  • A WW2 evacuee figure – design and make a freestanding doll
  • Paper collage of a WW2 blitz scene
  • WW2 persuasion poster 
  • Christmas craft

Lent Term:

  • Ink line drawings – winter trees
  • Papier mache canopic jars
  • Ancient Egyptian pattern, shape and craft – (sketching opportunities during history visit to British Museum)
  • Eisteddfod art competition

Summer Term:

  • Drawing and painting in the style of Patrick Heron
  • Repeat patterns/pastel studies inspired by William Morris – (observational drawing in IH garden)
  • Clay tiles – Victorian theme
  • Textiles – tie dying – rainforest inspired
