At Inglefield House we plan and deliver a high quality, fun and challenging computing curriculum which allows the children to explore and development a range of fundamental ICT skills.
With a focus on computer science, the pupils are taught how a computer system works, how to use a computer effectively to enhance their learning and how to create their own programs. They learn how to apply the fundamental principles and concepts of computer science, including abstraction, logic, algorithms and data representation. Additionally, the girls become confident at analysing problems in computational terms, and have repeated practical experience of writing computer programs in order to solve such problems.
We realise the importance of digital literacy in today’s world and we promote, through motivation and enjoyment, computational thinking, problem solving and creativity.
We recognise the links with other areas of learning such as Mathematics, Science, English and humanities and we find meaningful links to use ICT to enhance the pupils learning.
At Inglefield House, the girls are taught computing through dedicated ICT sessions in addition to coverage within other areas of the Curriculum.
They are able to access a range of software and ICT equipment which enables them to produce excellent work and through purposeful use of computers; our aim is that they will become confident and competent users of information and communication technology.
In Year 3, the girls learn about the parts of the computer and how to navigate around our computer system. They learn to save and successfully retrieve their work to a variety of locations on the school network, online and locally to a device. They begin to understand the reasons for saving in different places.
They are introduced to Control programming using the program ‘Scratch’ where they learn how to create simple algorithms to program animations. Additionally they evaluate and improve their work in relation to specific criteria and make improvements accordingly.
Pupils learn to communicate safely on the internet, Use ICT to collect and analyse data and learn the importance of using technology safely, respectfully and responsibly. They recognise unacceptable behaviour and identify ways to report any concerns.
Year 4 Pupils learn to use control programming to develop an educational game. They explore how to include variables to respond to inputs from an audience.
They also use control programming to prototype an interactive toy, produce digital music and present the weather.
The girls learn that the Internet is a collection of computers (servers) joined together across the world and begin to understand the basic structure of the school network.
They use technology safely, respectfully and responsibly; recognise unacceptable behaviour and identify a range of ways to report their concerns.
In Year 5 the pupils plan their own simple computer game. They design characters and backgrounds, and create a working prototype, which they develop further based on feedback they receive. The pupils learn about communicating information securely through an introduction to cryptography. They also use vector and turtle graphics to explore geometric art, taking inspiration from the work of Escher and Riley. Finally they learn to create a website explaining e-safety and responsible online behaviour.
In Year 6 the pupils learn more about communicating information securely. They investigate early methods of communicating over distances, learn about two early ciphers, and consider what makes a secure password. The issue of e-safety is covered linked to security of information. Pupils also learn how to create a blog, and a media-rich website. They research examples of art gallery architecture and create a virtual gallery, which they use to exhibit their own artwork.
