UKS2 Science is taught by a senior school teacher in both Years 5 and 6. The programme of study is designed to lead on from the LKS2 Science course and provide a firm and broad foundation for study in Years 7 and 8.
The Schemes of Work build on the statements in the National Curriculum for KS2 Science that pertain to the programme of study that has been devised by the HMSG Science Department as part of our innovative 5-8 core curriculum. All aspects of teaching and learning are covered, including safety and the principles of scientific investigation in particular. The course is well-resourced with networked interactive activities and it is supported by text books and work books.
Extended individual learning opportunities and participation in both internal and external competitions are actively sought and encouraged. Who would have dreamed that a half term homework project could have led two HMSG girls to start their own company and compete for funding in the Dragon’s Den? Pupils from both inside the school and outside are invited to the Yr5 STEMWorks Day and the Yr6 Saturday taster day.

Year 3 lays the foundation of Science education throughout the school. Pupils are encouraged to develop their understanding of natural phenomena, and their curiosity is stimulated as they discover why things happen in the way they do. Methods of enquiry and investigation are taught to stimulate creative thought. Children learn to ask scientific questions and begin to appreciate the way Science will affect their future on a personal, national and global level. Pupils are taught by a specialist and have timetabled use of both Science and computer laboratories.
A variety of teaching and learning styles are used in Science lessons. Our principal aim is to develop children’s knowledge, skills and understanding. Sometimes we do this through whole class teaching, while at other times we engage the children in enquiry-based research activities, incorporating DT. Lessons begin with clear learning objectives, building on previous knowledge and understanding of the subject matter. The plenary session allows us to evaluate what has been learned through rich questioning. We encourage the children to ask, as well as answer scientific questions. They have the opportunity to use a variety of data, such as statistics, graphs, pictures and photographs. They use ICT in Science lessons where it enhances their learning and to develop their personal knowledge through extension activities.

- Animals including humans
- Rocks, fossils and dinosaurs
- Forces and magnets
- Plus a ‘Super Science’ topic: ‘We are Astronauts’
We continue to develop scientific skills and knowledge in Year 4. Pupils are given further opportunities to use different types of scientific enquiry to answer questions.
They set up simple practical enquiries, making systematic and careful observations, taking accurate measurements using a range of equipment, including thermometers and data loggers. Pupils are given opportunities to gather, record, classify and present data in a variety of ways to help in answering scientific questions. Findings from enquiries are reported in a variety of ways including oral and written explanations, displays or presentations. Pupils use results to draw simple conclusions, make predictions, evaluate and suggest improvements and raise further questions. Differences, similarities or changes related to simple scientific ideas and processes are identified, whilst straightforward scientific evidence is used to answer questions or to support their findings. Organisational and independence skills are developed. Cross-curricular links used where appropriate
