Year 3 - Gamelan Workshop
Year 3 recently enjoyed a Gamelan workshop at St. David’s Hall in Cardiff. We were all able to play an instrument from Java in Indonesia. We all played the big gong. We had to strike it right on its nose! The tuk is a very important instrument which keeps a steady beat throughout the piece. Gamelan music is never written down. We had to learn a piece by listening carefully to it, singing it and then we learnt to play it on our instruments. There were flat instruments, nongs with noses, a tuk, the pul and the big gong.

Year 4 - Wales Millennium Centre, Cardiff
|
|
Year 4 recently went to the Wales Millennium Centre to take part in a musical workshop. First we went on a backstage tour to the dressing rooms and auditorium. We then worked in groups to compose music to accompany 'The First Dragon' story. 'We went into one of the dressing rooms and were allowed to touch and feel the amazing costumes' (Elin) |

We listened to string players performing Vivaldi’s Four Seasons on the Tesco stage whilst we ate our lunch. Finally we went to the studio to record our music. One by one we recorded our scenes, then we listened to it. 'There were lots of spongy bits around the studio to absorb the sound' (Nina) We really enjoyed listening to our finished CD because the sound technician changed some of our voices on the recording to sound like the characters. We had such a lot of fun. |

Year 3 have consolidated their History curriculum with a visit to the Celtic Village at the Museum of Welsh Life at St Fagans. There they were met by a fierce Celtic warrior who invited them into his Roundhouse, where he talked to the girls about living in Celtic times. The girls were able to try their hand at weaving on an upright loom, and best of all, making wattle and daub with lovely, gooey mud!

In the Lent term Year 3 visited the Barn Owl Sanctuary in Gloucester. As “The Owl Who Was Afraid of the Dark” is one of our class texts, it was an ideal opportunity for us all to learn about the lifestyle and welfare of owls. We got to meet several owls at close quarters and actually had the chance to fly “Gyzmo”, a rather beautiful barn owl. Kaln was another one of our favourites. We had the thrill of this bird of prey swooping down and flying above our heads. What a day! We all hope to see Kaln, Gyzmo and Paddy again one day.
Year 4 and 5 - National Museum of Wales
Year 4 and 5 went to the National Museum of Wales in Cardiff. We concentrated on “La Parisienne” by Renoir and “Water lilies” by Monet. It was amazing to see the actual paintings hanging on the wall. We were also given the opportunity to draw our favourite painting in the gallery. We loved the gallery and hope we get the chance to go there again!
