A Caring Environment

Inglefield House is the preparatory school of Haberdashers' Monmouth School for Girls. Purpose built to accommodate approximately one hundred 7 to 11 year old girls, it shares the same extensive site as the senior school. Thus, it combines the friendliness and close pastoral care of a small school with the outstanding physical and teaching resources of a large school.

"As soon as you open the door into Inglefield House you get a sense of a happy community. The teachers are fun and welcoming. You always have a great time."

We are strongly committed to the class teaching system and it is through the close bond that is formed between a class teacher and her pupil that security and stability are established and maintained. At Inglefield House, we create a happy and well-ordered atmosphere in which girls find learning a pleasure and are able to express themselves with confidence. Girls of preparatory school age are excited about learning and we are committed to helping them realise their potential.  At this stage of their lives, girls need to build a solid foundation for future learning. Therefore, although we do take account of special aptitudes, we provide a broad curriculum.

The classrooms are light, bright and airy, and the specialist facilities include design and information technology areas. Classrooms are arranged around our excellent communal resources - an assembly hall, library, ICT suite and art area.

Joining a Great Team

"Sport is great fun. We do swimming in our pool and games include netball, hockey, lacrosse and athletics. The facilities are very good. We have house tournaments, a gala and sports day at the end of the year."

Inglefield House has its own facilities, together with access to many of the resources of the Haberdashers' Monmouth School for Girls; for example, the superb swimming pool, sports hall and playing fields.  Most girls of preparatory school age respond positively to good teaching and encouragement in the creative arts. Whether it be painting pictures or working with clay, taking part in a choir or orchestra, or performing a part in a play, young girls are natural, enthusiastic performers. Inglefield House has a vibrant atmosphere: musically, for example, playing instruments, singing and dancing are all part of the every day activities that give the girls opportunities to express themselves creatively and develop self-esteem and confidence.

Encouraging Creativity

"In art we do all sorts of fun things - for example we dipped mushrooms into red paint to make poppies."

"There is an orchestra, recorder group and choirs and we perform regularly at concerts, festivals and in assemblies."

The teaching, based on but extending beyond the National Curriculum, falls into six main subject areas: language, mathematics, science, technology, creative arts, humanities, and physical education. The girls are organised into the four Key Stage 2 year groups, Years 3 to 6.

Looking to the Future

The preparatory school stage of education is important in itself and as a stepping stone to senior school. At Inglefield House we are committed to excellent formal teaching. We aim to develop organisational skills and a level of self discipline and independence that will enable the girls to participate successfully in the life of the senior school. The girls learn teamwork and responsibility by attending regular School Council meetings where they are led by the Preparatory department's own Sixth Form prefect.
